Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

One of my old favorites. Pours a very dark brown to black with a good sized brownish head with some lacing. Roasted malt is the dominant flavor, but the oatmeal is noticeable and it provides a unique smoothness. Very drinkable stout that is uncommonly smooth. Strong recommendation.

Bottled. Black with a super large foaming brown head (took two pours to get it in). Brown sugar and coffee, with an originality that sets it apart from regular beers. I was disturbed half way through this one by gorgeous women returning home from dinner. The point being that whilst it was nice enough stout, it didn’t move me like some of the Imperials I’ve had in the past week. Flavour is dry with only medium length.

It’s good, but not that good!. Has something like a aroma as sherry, which is found again in the taste. But I didn’t find it so good a combination for a beer.

550 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. Nearly black (= very dark brown with a reddish hue) colour, thick tan head. Moderate roasty aroma, notes of coffee and chocolate. Strong roasty flavour with coffee and bitter chocolate elements, dry roasty finish. Clearly a good beer.

Opaque black with rich head...creamy indeed...smells a little chocolate and sweet with little roasty note at the end of the smell...tastes very rich and complex, a little chocolatey but balanced out very nicely...finishes clean and bitter...

didn’t detect much aroma. it has a fairly benign taste. Not bad, but nothing spectacular. Although nearly black in color, it had a very light bodied taste.

Bottle. Nice looking pour; dark brown with a medium, firm and long lasting dark tan/light brown head. Aroma of oats, fruit, roasted meat, caramel and vanilla. Flavor really had a nice blend of sweet vanilla and caramel, with some roasted oats and light meatiness in the finish. Palate was pretty good, surprisingly almost bordering on watery. However, it worked and made it quite drinkable. After taste was quite tasty. Can see why this is much loved and surprised I haven’t rated this (although I had it a good 4 or 5 years ago).

Very nice, sweet, a little alcoholic, very good brewed. The taste is just awesome. Reminds me some Stouts from Central and SouthAmerica which are not really known.
