Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Very roasty stout. Quite sweet, very nice head. I can’t recognize the oatmeal, but what the hell it got so many other strong points!

Bottle. Dark brown color with a lasting foamy light brown head. A toasted malt and bready aroma with chocolate highlights. Sweet, creamy smooth, and slightly dry at the finish. A touch of tart fruit in the flavor which accompanies the toasted malts, caramel, and bread.

Big, booming tan head, and a color as black as the darkest night. Aroma is all things good: fresh, nutty, dry, coffee, espresso, the very essence of roastiness. Texture is smooth, with late bitterness coming through on the palate, very chewy and substantial. Comes on sweet, warm, and wonderful, a comforting stout. Honestly, how do they do it? There are many who attempt this style, but no one comes close to Samuel Smith’s when it comes to flavor, to taste, to utter perfection. Nothing less than happiness can result from drinking this fine brew. Always to find a spot among my Top Five. Absolutely perfect!

0.355 l bottle. Almost black dark brown color with small head. sweetish and roasty aroma wtih salty licorice and a hint of grass. The flavor is also sweetish and roasty with coffee, salty licorice, toffee and fruity esters. Dryes up to coffeish finish. Rich and fairly full bodied. Tasty but I could not pick any oatmeal character.

This has always been a favorite, though I hadn't tried a bottle in a while. Deep, deep brown, with a dark beige head that leaves nice lacing. It is a touch lighter bodied than some stouts, and the oatmeal makes its presence known. The smooth chocolate flavors of the malt are nicely integrated. Just a really well done beer.

Bottle. Slightly rubbery aroma. Mildly sweet caramel malts in the nose. Cant detect chocolate or coffee. Mostly opaque dark brown with a frothy tan head. Cardboardy start with a small astrigency with chocolate, rpasted notes in the middle. Finishes mildly sweet. Very smooth and silky. A nice beer, but not a 4.03...

My favorite bottled stout so far. Delicously roasty, like burnt chocolate, and complex fruits like fig, cherry, prune, plum. It is smooth and creamy. Just the right amount of alcohol presence, too. Outstanding, my benchmark for bottled sweet (English) stouts.
