Aroma of weak coffee plus a faint sour smell. Dark chocolate mocha flavors. Reminds me of Mexican chocolate. Palate is rich and smooth, not too heavy. Pleasing aftertaste lingers forever. This beer can be enjoyed 15 minutes after your glass is empty. Overall a very good beer with wide distribution and you have to love that. Wherever you go, a bit of Tadcaster is likely to be there. The aroma features chocolate and dark malt, but overall it possesses a clean scrubbed quality that isn’t really soapy or detergent laden, but more along the lines of cleanly scrubbed porcelain. There are hints of the cane sugar and for all I know they may be what is creating that freshly cleaned aroma. The body is a light dampening black that seems to cast a general shadow on whatever space it occupies. The head starts out large and fluffy. It is fully two fingers thick and a healthy mocha color to start, but fades in relatively short order to a compressed dime thin affair. For is sweet and brown sugar/molasses accented which is obviously from cane sugar. The middle is smooth, sweet and malty while the finish has a hotness that borders on spicy. The far aftertaste brings an unwelcome metallic tinge that adds both an off flavor and a mild tingling tartness that is akin to sticking a 9 volt battery on your tongue. Needless to say it’s not a positive element to the flavor composition. <P>

Mmmmm. The finest sweet stout England offers. All the better cause it isn’t overly sweet. EithCubes (2148), Indiana, USA

Aroma is thick and meaty, heavy chocolate with coffee and toffee, strong maltiness. Ruby pitch pour with a rocky, creamy brown head. Powerful taste, roasted malt is much stronger here, with all the mentioned aroma notes, and a strong, classy dryness. Well-hopped and slightly vinous in feel. Could use additional body. Sourness evident after about a half-pint. Really yummy. blutt59 (2144), Dallas, Texas, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jun 18, 2003 Aghast at my sheer ignorance, I was surprised to find, recently, that I had not rated one of the quintessential "stages" of a ratebeerian's evolution. Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout. The natural progression of Budweiser to Guinness is furthered for many a beer fan by the wide availability and quality of this oatmeal stout. While its relatively thin body and "safe" flavor may leave the advanced connoisseur a bit wanting, I am still satisfied by this creamy brew. Pours dark brown with a nice, dense tan head (much like Mackeson XXX). Aroma is roasted, sweet, and a bit chocolatey. Flavor is succulent, smooth, creamy, and surprisingly sweet, consisting of toasted malts, malt sugars, and a note of chocolate. In my opinion a better brew than their Imperial Stout. A return from more venturesome territory proves pleasant. zach8270 (2115), Henrietta, New York, USA
