Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Very, very dark with lasting fluffy tan head that left great lace. Dark roast coffee smell. Dark chocolate sweetness with a roast coffee bitterness in the finish. Smooth mouthfeel.

Complex beer. Very roasty. Not a bad stout. I enjoyed it. Smooth finish. Malty. Chocolate malt. Deep dark color with a tan head.

[bottle] Pours a deep black with a nice thick tan head. Aroma of sweetness mixed with coffee. Wonderful initial taste of sweet with various other flavors mixed in. Mouthfeel of liquid silk. Wonderfully smooth and semi-sweet finish.

Clear bottles are an insult to good beer. WHy don’t they switch to brown bottles like they do with the lager and IPA? This beer however, when found fresh, the other reviews say it all. Silky mouthfeel that numbs the tongue, yet very crisp. What a concept! Addictive buttery aroma of oats and molasses. A very unique bitter finish. Winey, oaty, bubblegum and a sheer joy to drink. Never has a beer eluded all other styles in its class as does this.

This was my favorite beer before discovering Shakespeare Stout. Nice and heavy, full flavor. Somewhat sweet but not overbearing.

This goes under the WTF catagory for me since I know I’ve had good bottles of this in the past. Pours dark bronw with garnet hue and large sudsy tan head. The aroma is faint - what is there is roasted malt, light chocolate and light sour dark fruits. Medium body with a light amount of soft carbonation. Starts with sharp dark fruits, some roasted malt and sourness. The finish adds very little to the mix, just a bit of spice. This was highly disappointing. Hopefully I get a better bottle in the near future and can rerate this higher.

Dark but not quite opaque, some ruby highlights. Good head but in the drinking this came off as thin. The flavors were retrained and left you wanted more. A good beer but I've had others I prefer to this one.
