Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Black colour. Aroma is roasty, mocha. Flavour of malt, roasted coffee, notes of chocolate, quite filling and very creamy. Finishes with a long bitterness.

18.9 oz bottle - Pours up a thick, frothy head , very dark brown body. This is a somewhat sweet, easy to drink stout. It has a creamy, almost oily mouthfeel. It’s quite good if you want to reach for the malts tonight.

OK, never thought I’d get to drink this…too expensive. Samuel Smith Old Brewery Tadgster the Celebrated Oatmeal Stout a product of England. For a 12oz bot, $3.75 @ 3Sons, Wexford. Pour turns my steeler stein black. Sweet aroma. No offense in the initial taste. Nice palate, not too carbonated. Roasted hops finish but not too much lingering bitter. Very happy! One cool thing about the bottle; when I bought it I thought it was dark brown. After the beer was gone, bottle was clear! This is more like a sweet stout than a regular stout.

Poured a black dark color with a thick lasting creamy light brown head. Sweet caramel roasted malt aroma. Nice rich sweet caramel roasted malt flavor. Simply awesome!

Dark but not quite opaque, some ruby highlights. Good head but in the drinking this came off as thin. The flavors were retrained and left you wanted more. A good beer but I've had others I prefer to this one.

This is an old favorite of mine. This used to be a mainstay of my beer fridge. As time has moved on I find myself drinking it far less but I still find it a most respectable brew. Sampled from a 12 oz clear bottle this beer pours dark black with a large creamy dark brown head. The aroma is sweet, malty and has chocolate undertones. The mouthfeel is thick, creamy and smooth. The flavor is strong malted milk with some sweet chocolate and a mildly bitter roasted malt finish. I may have to start going back to this one more again.

Bottled. Pours a clear black-brown with a lacy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and burnt toast. The body is medium, with light carbonation. Taste starts creamy sweet with chocolate, coffee, oatmeal, molasses. Finish has some coffee-bitter and and slightly sour elements to it. Tasting Sam Smiths again for the first time in a long time. It seemed bigger and fuller before, but this is the beer that led me out of the land of lagers, lo those many years ago. Probably still the best "supermarket stout" out there.

Everyone I know likes this beer. I liked it so much that I bought an Oatmeal Stout T-shirt! Typically Samuel Smith-ian character all-around (which is to say excellent!)
