Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Pours dark brown, almost black, with decent sized pillowy brown head. Great retention. Deep lovely sweet aroma of coffee, chocolate and liquorice. Absolute silk in the mouth. Brilliant feel and body. Subtle sweet initial tastes of caramel and chocolate. Slightly roast finish, with a hint of coffee. Absolutely brilliant.

bottle. Brew poured a deep chocolate brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of toffee, caramel, chocolate and sweet cherries. Finish was smooth and sweet. A great stout.

5/31/02: dark dark brown with a big & creamy tan head which dissappears quickly, not overly aromatic, smooth but full bodied, nice oatmeal-like finish
Re-Rate 8/25/02: An english hot and sour soup..tending to be extremely sweet in oatmeal ways..

550 ml bottle - Pours a deep dark brown color with a nice long lasting light tan head. Has a noble hop aroma. Light roasted malt flavor with just a little sweetness. Smooth taste with a bitter finish. Medium body. A good beer.

Bottle: About time I’ve rated this. Dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of oats, some chocolate. Flavor, oats, a little bready, some roasted notes, just not a lot going on for me. Another instance of the evolving palate, I used to swear by this stuff.

Black, with a good tan head atop. Smell is slightly sweet, and hearty oatiness. Light sweet almost caramel like flavor with oat and high carbonation from the bottle initially, but which reduced drastically after sitting out for 15 minutes. A really flavorful, smooth, easy to drink oatmeal stout with more umph to it that Young’s milder flavored version of the Oatmeal Stout.

A dark brown pour with a light lacing. A nice aroma of roasted malt. A flavor of chocolate and a bitter from the grain. A nice mouthfeel not watery but not hardly as thick as I like. A nice beer.
