Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Bottle from Bier Koning. Black body, nice head. Fruity, malty nose. Creamy taste. Distinctive and delicious.

Perhaps I’m used to motor oil, but I found this stout a bit on the thin side. Quite tasty, but it just doesn’t fill the mouth as much as some stouts.

Dark brown in color with a good head. Aroma has a little roastiness, toastiness, malts. Taste has a good flavor with slight chocolate and the oats. Medium body. Smooth and creamy.

Wonderful black body with a large tan head. Aroma is sugar, oats, caramel, chocolate, light coffee and roast. Flavor is the same, extremely smooth due to the oats and the sugar. Wonderful texture, but the body and flavors are thin. In 2004 this was my favorite beer, hands down.

This wasn’t worth the hype - too thin and too dry. Faint traces of dark roasted coffee and malts, but not the right balance with bitterness. I liked the rich head, but I’ll reach for a different stout next time I’m at the beer store.

Bottle. Pours very dark ruby with brown, slightly soapy head. The aroma is crabapple, unripe berries, bitter chocolate, and a touch of cheese. The flavor, while less, erm, sour than the aroma, still has a lot of unripe fruit; quite zesty for a stout. A lot of toast and caramel in there, too. I can only pick out the hops if I concentrate. The finish is very clean. The mouthfeel is a bit thin.

50 cl. bottle pours a black fluid with a decent brown head. Has a malted chocolate and coffee smell. Medium bodied with a nice smooth mouthfeel. Taste is of dark roasted malts and sweet grain oatmeal. Very drinkable and tasty. One of the best Stouts around before the Craft brew revolution and still good in this day and age. Glad to know that some things don’t change.
