Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Bottle. Pours very dark ruby with brown, slightly soapy head. The aroma is crabapple, unripe berries, bitter chocolate, and a touch of cheese. The flavor, while less, erm, sour than the aroma, still has a lot of unripe fruit; quite zesty for a stout. A lot of toast and caramel in there, too. I can only pick out the hops if I concentrate. The finish is very clean. The mouthfeel is a bit thin.

Bottle from Bier Koning. Black body, nice head. Fruity, malty nose. Creamy taste. Distinctive and delicious.

550ml bottle. Almost black, dark brown with a thick light brown head. Rich, roasty nose, malty, sweet dark chocolate. Deep roasted flavors, dark sweet chocolate. Very smooth satin mouthfeel. Excellent.

Bottled. Indeed sweet, rich, thick. I can’t help feel these are a little overrated.

Very dark (yet unclouded) with mahogany around its edges, topped with a huge, tan head that settles rockily over the course of the beer. Initial aroma struck me as a prune & caramel ice cream sundae! Rum & soy emerge later. A musty background suggests oxidation, but I find it rather fitting here. Bitter coffee flits about in the flavor, but the experience is mostly sweet malts with chocolate & dark fruits. Soy sauce shows late, adding a "meaty" character. Mouthfeel is sticky-smooth and the finish is a little bit dirty. Given its availability in my area, this would make a fine "everyday" stout.

Pitch black with hints of dark ruby at the edges. Big wonderful creamy light brown head that clings to the glass in big sheets. What a fine looking beer. The aroma is big chocolate with lots of sweet malt and some grainy oatmeal aromas. The flavor is truly outstanding, choclate with lots of other malt flavors swirling about. Truly a silky body with a sweet finish that descends into a nice roasted bitterness. Far and away the best offering from this brewery. IMO this is the epitome of this style. Yum.
