Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

550 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with some garnet highlight when held to light. This thing has a super creamy tan head that has on intentions of leaving me soon. Some roasted oatmeal cookie aroma, but its very unimpressive. Flavor is of light roasted coffee, with some sort of bitter bite. The palate is silky-ish and the finish is dry. Not a beer I will be drinking again soon.

Tasted 12/29/07. 550ml bottle. Dark brown hue with a slight ruby tint. Finger width of beige head. Toffee fruity fudgy oatmeal milk chocolate aromas. Full bodied and super sweet. Tingling effervescence. Chocolate and bready malts. Rich full bodied and delicious. Slight fruit note. Berries and figs. Great chocoalte and oatmeal grainy flavors. Slight spice. Sticky with cocoa and cola notess. Tart with a touch of citrus in the middle. So good! All those Hippies can’t be wrong!

Was not quite what I like in a stout. The Imperial Stout I felt was much better. I really can’t complain, but I think a lot of American stouts are more complex than this one.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a tan head. Sweet aroma, with bread, dough, oats, and coffee. Medium body, smooth, a little thin for a stout. Flavor is way more roasted than the aroma lets on, with notes of coffee, toast, and grass. A great beer, usually my dinner beer of choice.

I’m not much of a fan of outmeal stout, but this wasn’t all that bad. Actually I was quite impressed with it. Samuel smith makes a very fine brew no matter what style and this is no exception.

You never know with beer packaged in clear bottles. I was unimpressed with this brew. I can taste the quality but it just really didn’t do anything for me. Either the beer is old, skunked, overrated, or I just don’t appreciate the oatmeal stouts. That being said, my rating is only slightly below the site average, primarily due to high marks in aroma, appearance and palate. I prefer beers that score well in Flavor. Molasses aroma with dark chocolate notes. Very nice aroma. Dark, reddish brown, almost opaque body. Large, tan, tight bubble head. Nice lace and lasting head. At 1st sip I thought it was much milder than I expected. Perhaps this is due to the Ratebeer big beer bias. I figured a brew rated over a 4 had to be big. In fact, without looking, I am guessing this is the highest rated 5% or less ABV beer on the site. This is a nice stout; creamy with some dry dark chocolate and some lactose. Has an English aftertaste. This just isn’t my favorite beer at all and I’m not overly impressed.
