Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Very dark brown nearing black body with a huge creamy tan head. Aroma is chocolatey and roasted nuts. Flavour is silky smooth malts and roasted cocoa with a slight fruity note. Finish is sweet and chewy. A beauty!

Pours with a light brown, one-fingered head, fades soon and leaves little lace. Light-medium carbonation. Deep red/amber color. Nose is a light roasted coffee. Heavy bodied, beefy malty/hoppy taste but has a sweetness to it, very smooth, very drinkable; $8.99 for a 4-pack of 12oz. Also $3 for a 550ml bottle from Northend Superette Manchester, NH.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a tan head. Sweet aroma, with bread, dough, oats, and coffee. Medium body, smooth, a little thin for a stout. Flavor is way more roasted than the aroma lets on, with notes of coffee, toast, and grass. A great beer, usually my dinner beer of choice.

Big tan head, good lacing. Dark brown/black brew. Sweet, roasty, grainy somewhat vinous nose. Medium body. Grainy, fruity flavored, sweet malts. Finish is sweet, kinda thin. Ho hum.

Bottle. Pour is deep black, with a settling tan head. Only aroma present is a faint roasted malt. Taste is very smooth, with the mild roast flavor. Finish really wasn’t much at all. I now have had several Oatmeal Stout’s from producers I respect, and it is time to come to the conclusion that I am not wild about this style.
