Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

$2.99 550mL bottle from Trader Joes. Pours with little head despite heavy pour. Small to microbubble tan foam forms around the edge of the glass, slightly clinging as I swirl. Pitch black liquid. Mild aroma, some roasted malt, some oatmeal, little hop aroma, Pretty dry taste. Low bitterness. Has that dry acidic roastiness, but it small quantities. Not bad, but not my favorite style.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a decent light brown head. The taste is amazing; first a burnt chocolate taste followed by a fruity/hoppy mix. Like a Cadbury fruit bar, but better. Great!

35.5cl bottle from Willow Bend Liquors (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark brown to black with a massive, pillowy and foamy tan head that settles slowly and gracefully laces the glass. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of maple syrup, honey, toffee, and maybe just faint hints of coffee. Flavor has much stronger roasted malt and coffee notes with fainter hints of caramel, honey and toffee. Some ripe dark fruit notes as well. Generally medium to full-bodied with a sweet malt and slightly bitter coffee finish.

Bottle. Pours a dark color with generous head that sticks. Sweet aroma that gives a hint to what’s inside. Taste is very sweet light hop and heavy malt hide on the palate and goes down very smooth. Great food stout. Cheers!

Very dark coloured, initially large brown head. Smoked, port-whiskey like lactic aroma. Tastes like a saturated sugar solution with some fruity and smoked elements. Sourness in palate. Very unusual beer, not really my style. Some extra points for originality.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark reddish brown with a 2 finger light tan head and minor lacing. Nose is sweet malt, light roasted barley and mild coffee. Taste is brown sugar, light chocolate, burnt caramel malt and a mild, coffee finish. Mouth feel is fairly light for the style. It’s just ok, but highly drinkable.

12oz bottle 4/17/09-Pours a black body with a nice tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste of the same with some sweetness and toffee coming through. This medium bodied stout is a little light in body but is still tasty but was expecting more from this brew.

0.55l bottle courtesy of and shared with heavy (huge thanks!)
Poured a black (extremely dark red) body with a fluffy tan head that collapsed unevenly at a medium pace. Weak oily roasty malty nose, notes of chocolate, some odd herbal notes too. The taste is sweetish and roasty, smoth chocolatey taste, finely balanced, light bitterness, weak vinuous notes, some smoke, light roasty aftertaste. Overall quite nice but neither the flashiest nor the tastiest beer around.
