Pours whiite thick and nice brown head, excellent appearance. Aroma is sweet and full, not sure what of though. Taste is soo soo smooth, sweet and chocolaty, coffee and a little very little mollasses, but very very smooth. Overall a great great and unexpected winner. RERATE: Down from 4.6- 3.3. Sweet roasty, chocolate. Soft hyowever nothing like as good as i had it before. hopscotch (5549), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

Dark milk chocolate with lactic sweetness dominates the body and can be somewhat overpowering. Still, this is a very good beer and one of Samuel Smith's best. Bov (5514), Bienne, Switzerland

A decent brew. JorisPPattyn (5193), Antwerpen, Belgium
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Aug 27, 2003 Very dark brown, nearly black; dirty brown head, diminishing but permanent. Nose: chocolate - between milk and fondant (dark). Vague burnt malt/grain, licorice, sweet...and smelly socks. Taste is more cereal - indeed like oatmeal flakes. Chocolate returns in the background/palate, like slightly sweetened fondant. Chocolatey character, bitter-sweet, gains more emphasis in the finish, like a lesser chocolate with much non-cocoa additions. If I agree with anything in the general consensus, it's with its perfect balance - truly impressive. Aftertaste has a surprising new flavour: (French) candied violets. In the category "sweet stout", it's hard to imagine anything better...
Oh for trying the St. Ambroise or the Nils Oskar... imdownthepub (5186), Banbury, Oxfordshire, England
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 26, 2003 Bottled, Pasteurised. Deep black colouu with big, long lasting, tan head. Beautifully presented beer, nice and still, plenty of body, but it would be much improved as a Bottle conditioned beer, the life has gone and there is a boiled cabbagy note. Not the best stout because of this, there are much more interesting ones around. There is a sweet fruity background, with a dry bitterish note. Good, but not that good! | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 10, 2004 Black body with nice beige head. Roasted malts in the aroma along with some coffee and hints of bitterness. Flavor has a light sweetness, some roasted malts hints of coffee and chocolate and finishing with a bitterness. Palate was too thin for me.
