Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

G-DAMN I love this beer!!! Oily and sweet. Filling and warming. My wife swears that she tastes Gouda and Worschestire.

Near black with ruby hues. Aroma of molasses, brown sugar and oatmeal. Notes of toffee and brown sugar. Long bittersweet finish. Excellent stout.

Poured a very dark brown, almost black colour, with a foamy, tan coloured head, which soon settled down. Slightly sweet, roast aroma. Great creamy mouthfeel, very smooth. Balanced oatmeal, chocolate, burnt taste. Light bitter finish. Excellent.

Update to my previous rating (which was nothing at all): black color, modest charcoal head with beautiful lacing around the glass, sweet nose with notes of toasted oats, licrorice & a touch of brandy, medium body, very smooth, flavors of sweet malts, licrorice, toasted oats & a hint of cream, smooth finish with a little bit of a bitter bite, an excellent oatmeal stout

Very dark brown, with a dark tan head that is rather hefty and robust. A very attractive glass imed after pouring. Aroma is a bit sharp but the classic traits of a good stout or maybe a porter come though. First impression is smokey, like an old fireplace. Hints of chocolate and a bit bitter. Very nice but lacking some of the full, warm feel of others of its illk.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a nice and big foamy head. Aromas are a little fruity with a kind of balsamic/soy edge to it. Flavor has a lot of oats and cocolate with a bit of creaminess to it. Nice stuff.

not much on the nose... flavor does not have enough roasted malt. bitter chocolate prevails. nice and creamy with a bitter sweet toffee finish. needs something up front 648417 3.9 ...bottle aged 2 years...pours woody dark brown with a thin beige head. woody aroma with lots of molasses. flavor is still lightly burnt malts, some creamy chocolate, dry nuttiness and a mild coffee finish. creamy oatmeal texture. 747417 3.9

9/23/09. nutty caramel cremes with a shot of coffee in the aftertaste. not really deep or complex but it is solid and well crafted. 8/4/8/4/17/4.1

Brown with some ruby highlights and a creamy large slowly fading beige crown. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, oatmeal and a touch of smoke. Taste of oatmeal, chocolate and dry and roasted malts. Creamy palate with a mild dry finish. Pretty good.
