Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Dark brown color, big foamy head that lasts. Soft roasted aroma, some hops. Soft, oily mouthfeel, nicely blended hop and roast notes in the body and great subtle coffee notes following through into a surprisingly long palate. Semi sweet, and a little timid, but otherwise a uniquely balanced oatmeal stout.

Very dark with a fairly dark tan head. Perfect blend of toffee, chocolate, and roasted malt. Silky mouthfeel. Good stuff.

Black w/ thick creamy head. Roasted malt aroma w/ notes of figs. Smooth, silky texture. Moderately sweet, toasty, hints of nuts, & a dry silky finish. Yummy.

550 ml BROWN bottle. Poured a little thin for a stout and developed a head that was a little to fizzy also. Aroma is a on the sweet side for a stout and a little one dimensional also. Flavor isslightly better with some roasted malt notes, slight hop bitterness, and a little erthy yeastiness too. This one is average and needs more of anything to set itself off from the rest.

18.7 oz bottle. Cola colored; kicks up a big head that looks like sepia-tinged cooked oatmeal. Band-Aids, wheat/oats, touch of molasses. Mild malts with citric carb. Oats fade to hops, dries into chloraseptic. Expected the body to be fuller with some oatmeal smoothness but a little watery. OK.

18.7oz bottle. Almost black, but some brown on edges, firm tan head. Sweet burnt sugar aroma with some cocoa, roast, and mild acidity. Caramel, chocolate, roasted malt flavor. Pretty sweet, but not cloying at all. Medium body with fine carbonation. Smooth. Decent stout, but not everything was coming together for me. Tasted like it had more alcohol than it did, and I’m not to hot on that.

Very smooth, almost sweet flavor. Chocolate and roasted qualities stick out. Nice thick mouthfeel. Quite enjoyable.
