Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

18.7oz bottle. Almost black, but some brown on edges, firm tan head. Sweet burnt sugar aroma with some cocoa, roast, and mild acidity. Caramel, chocolate, roasted malt flavor. Pretty sweet, but not cloying at all. Medium body with fine carbonation. Smooth. Decent stout, but not everything was coming together for me. Tasted like it had more alcohol than it did, and I’m not to hot on that.

Very smooth, almost sweet flavor. Chocolate and roasted qualities stick out. Nice thick mouthfeel. Quite enjoyable.

A dark brew with full nectar. A dry style with a defined oat character. I caught a hint of celery on the finish. Overall very mellow, bland, and uninteresting which seems to be the style of S.S.

550 ml bottle pours chocolate black with a big tan mousse head and long finger lacing as it fades down. The aroma is the standard for quality stout as these guys set the bar, doughy, chocolate, a little roastedness and vanilla. Sweet oatmeal is the first flavor that hits my tongue followed by chocolate and roastednesss as the creamy mouthfeel laces down the inside of my mouth as it did before down my glass. The carbonation tinges on the tip of my tongue leaving the flavors of bakers chocolate and a lasting sweet bitterness.

Pours a black color with a small beige head. Aroma is malty and coffeeish with hints of hops, oatmeal, barley and brown sugar. Taste is slightly sweet, yet bitter with hints of roasted coffee, brown sugar, hops and oatmeal. Excellent.

50cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Almost black in colour, creamy off-white head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, a hint of liquorice. Flavour is sweet, chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, liquorice. Nice lingering roasted coffee bitter finish. Very soft and smooth mouthfeel, a bit watery at times, but really good flavours that all blend in very well. Would love to try this from tap.

Single bottle into an English pint glass. Creamy and delicious - absolutely one of my standby oatmeal stouts.
