Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

I have drank this beer so many times and just realized that I haven’t rated it, Duh! A nice aroma of roasted cereal with a hint of sweetness.Pours a nice rich oil color with a tan head that dissipated quickly.Lots of flavor here.Roasted malts, oats, and chocolate.Finish was slightly bitter.

Black in color with a beige head...aromas of brown sugar, ice cream and molasses. Flavor of browned oatmeal cookies with some musty red grapes. Very merlot like the imperial stout. Smooth and dry in the mouth. Displeasingly thin...but it goes down easy.

Pours a nearly black color with a thick off-white head. Decent lacing. Aroma unfortunately shows some signs of light damage (a little funky) but it there is a rich malt profile in their and some hints of coffee. Rich roasted malt flavor with strong coffee notes. Soft carbonation gives a fairly smooth mouthfeel. Very enjoyable. Not the thickest stout in the world but very enjoyable.

Mostly dark brown pour, creamy tan head. Nice bourbon cask-like sweet chocolate cherry aroma. Yummy nose. Slightly stale sweet chocolate malt with some coffee. Balanced, full and rewarding.

Bottle, pours a murky brown with oatmeal colored head. Really unique brew. Bitter, yet sweet at the same time with an almost chewable quality. Will have again.

RE-RATE: Wow, I used to drink Guinness regularly! While my tastes have evolved since my original rating of this, I still carry a torch for this very good English beer. ORIGINIAL RATING: Very good, full flavored, with hints of coffee, wood, oatmeal. I'm a Guinness fan, but this makes Guinness look like something advertised on American football commercials. Try it and you won't be disappointed!
