Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Re-rate: My rating will come down a bit here, but that's the beauty of learning about quality beer. Anyway, it is a dark, dark brown with a bubbly head. Immediate strong nose of oat and cereal. Some roast, meat malt as well. Tastes of roasted nuts, malts, oat. Some mild bitterness. Looses flavor as it sits and has a buttery, slippery type of mouthfeel that was unpleasant. Too short of a finish. Some good bitterness. Original: An amazingly tasteful beer that is smooth and easy to drink one after another. A definite must for any beer drinker.

bottle. Poured dark and inviting, with a large frothy aoff white head. The color was so dark, I could not see thru it when held up to my computer screen.Heavy nose ofmolasses and roasted malt.I really enjoyed this, a fine example of my favorite; dry stout. The last few brews I tried were only so, so. It was a pleaseure.

I didn’t read the other ratings here before I tasted this so I could form my own unbiased opinion. So when I came to add this rating, I was amused to see one of the more recent rating say "I didn’t even realize it was a clear bottle until I poured the beer." Um. Yeah, me too. Wow--this is beautiful beer! Pours incredibly deep black with a perfect abundant carmel brown head of fine bubbles that lace picturesquely down the sides of the glass. Buttery toffee aromas, with a hint of fruity esters. A pleasant yeastiness that is very much in the fam for Samual Smith’s brews. The head has a velvety, creamy feel on the lips like a latte made with whole milk. Palate is smooth, with none of the harsh bite that shows up in some stouts.Tastes of toffee, espresso, smooth roastiness, with a pleasant vinous feel. Thank you sir, may I have another?

Solid stout, not quite one of the best but good. Very dark brown with a tan head. Roasty aroma with some coffee. Toasted oat taste, nuts, and some coffee hints. Really creamy on the mouthfeel. Bloody ’ell!

Thanks to CaryTheDude for this one. Dark pout with big, tan pour. Aroma of CoCoWheats, milk chocolate. Flavor is Dark chocolate and oatmeal. A bit dry finish. For my first Samuel Smith, I dug it.

Were it not for being as sweet as it is (which is fitting for style, if not m,y pallette) I would rate this tops. Hey. it's summer in Texas and I'm drinking a stout and loving it. If that doesn't show some respect, think about it a minute. Lovely full head that makes me take a minute before burying my face in it. fantastic finish, but did I say I find it a tad sweet? Once I get past that I just love it.

Dark brown with a big, light brown head. Aroma has molasses, coffe and dark chocolate. Well balanced hops, dark roasted malts. Overall a great english beer.
