Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Deep, dark red color. Aroma like other SS beers, first sour, then some coffee and caramel. Their trademark tartness matches well with the rich, chocolatey flavers of this stout. The most outstanding quality of this ale is the silkiness of body which might be accented if served on draught under nitrogen. A treat.

Current Rating: I tried this again and I though it was very good, so time to re-rate. It actually came in a brown bottle (not clear). Smooth chocolate, coffee, and roast flavor. Almost creamy, with a little bit of hops. Past Rating: I tried this awhile ago and I remember it being very good, so I decided to try it again. Maybe I got a bad bottle or something, it may have been in the light to long with that damn clear bottle. It looked good, but tasted very strange almost like something had gone bad. I will give it more points than I think it deserves because I might have got a bad bottle. (7,4,5,3,11 3)

Deep mahogany color with little head. Roast aromas. Initially roast coffee flavors. As it warmed up it was sweeter and less harsh.

Wow. I guess oatmeal isn’t just for breakfast anymore! This thing was damn good. A thick, creamy color and a nice solid flavor.

My goodness, this is a heavy, sweet beer! It is more in the class of "dessert wine" than good ol' fashion beer. A very, very full flavor, with a good head and great aftertaste. My only real complaint is the low alcohol content.

Bitter sweet flavor/finish. Big creamy head. Just the right amount of carbonization. Very good.

Black body, huge light brown head, stays long, leaves beautiful laces; Quite big nose, deep and complex: loads of oatmeal, but also a sugary sweetness, figs and fresh fruit like apple and pear; Balanced body, perfectly smoth, with perfect amount of carbonation, all elements in play; quite long finish (I expected a bit more fill) complex with loads of character, bitter, fresh with a little sweetness, some malt and again fruit, pear and cherry. Great and very, very well made beer.
