Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Wonderful appearance. Not as powerful aroma as I hoped. Very pleasant mild, sweetish and grainy flavour with notes of seaweed. A good stout.

Pours black with a tan head. Smells of nuts and coffee. Taste is watery and boring. Not one I’d seek out again.

Delightful roasted chocolate malt syrup…Boiling caramel and keeping the vapor which arises from the pot…A dash of honey with some licorice...Quaffable grapes in a thinner than usual stout body...

Bottle: Completely black with a quite firm tanned head; big fruity (raisins, almost vinous) nose, toasted malt also detectable, but mainly espresso; full bitter-sweet flavour, smooth mouthfeel; sweet coffee, bitter chocolate, toasted malt and traces of hops in the long, long finish. A very rich, complex and tasty brew. Great pleasure.....

Jet black, huge rocky light-brown head. After opening this I was hit with a huge coffee, espresso, and bitter chocolate aroma. There were also some hints of molasses and brown sugar. Very rich and creamy texture. Flavour is of roasted barley, coffee, some faint smokiness and a trace of plum and cherry followed by a long coffee finish with some lingering bitterness. Absolutely delicious brew.

Bottle - Dark pour, lighter head than I expected. Smells like roasted coffee. Taste was normal at first, hearty stout, but aftertaste was like milk and cream, very smooth.

Bottled. Looks delicious, brown/black with a light brown head. Aroma of coffe, milk-chocolate and salty licorice. Flavor much the same. Full bodied and with some dry bitterness in the end. (051104)

I don’t know what it is, but I get high just looking at the this drawing black colour, with this huge cocoa-brown head. Amazing. The aroma is cocoa and coffee. The flavour is silk-smoothe and very pleasant again with cocoa and coffee. Very delicious stout
