Dark brown pour with a medium tan head. Sweet and malty chocolate aroma with coffee and some hop. Sweet malt flavor with chocolate and coffee in the finish. Still my favorite these guys make. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 25, 2006 I really don’t care much for English beer. But Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout? Man, there is no other stout like this one. I’m not going to get all high and mighty and give an intense description. I’ll just say what all the others on ratebeer already know: this is the best oatmeal stout you can get. jrob21 (1281), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 22, 2005 a nice stout. well balanced with malty flavors. a little thin. some of the higher potency stouts out there put this one to shame in terms of complexity. highlandlad (1278), Sydney, Australia
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 18, 2009 A smooth, sweet stout and one of the better beers from Sam Smiths. Too sweet to be sessionable, IMO, but a bottle makes a nice dessert. A good-looking beer: coal-black with a lavish cappuccino head showing lace and length. Restrained aroma of cocoa powder, quince paste, raisins and tokay, spoiled in part by that a pasteurised boiled-lolly taint. Medium-bodied and creamy. Minimal bitterness and "roastiness". Chocolate pudding, blackcurrant jam and oodles of sugars. Nice balance for a sweet stout. Dry finish. (500ml bottle from Leura Cellars) wunderbier (1271), Tampere, Finland
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 4/5 | 4/20 | Jul 7, 2003 Updated: Sep 4, 2007Horrible vegetal nastiness in a bottle. I’ve retried this a dozen times since my initial rating and have never been able to get beyond the oats lending a cabbage/broccoli flavour.
Black body with a lasting, creamy, light-brown head. Aroma of chocolate, molasses and burnt oats. Also doughy with a tinge of alcohol. Flavor is heavily sweet with a moderately sweet, moderately bitter finish. Full, creamy body. Almost a hint of dairy as it warms. heykevin (1269), Iowa City, Iowa, USA
