Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

I've many of these before I started Ratebeer, always like them. I got a gift box with pint glass and this and two other Sam's included. This is an excellent stout. I got to agree with the "Commercial Description" all the way. Medium dry, balance between bitterness and sweetness. Soft mouthfeel.

Sampled at the Sam Smith tasting at Blacklick Wine and Spirits on 2.5.09. Dark brown pour with a medium tan head. Sweet and malty chocolate aroma with coffee and some hop. Sweet malt flavor with chocolate and coffee in the finish. Still my favorite these guys make.

My favorite beer! Its bittersweet finish complements a hearty dinner. It is great both chilled and at room tempature.

Huge head on dark brown to black beer. Not really a stout, not really fair to compare it to stouter stuff, but at 5% abv it is a great session beer. Good mouthfeel, pleasant taste but not memorable.

A black colored beer, with a thick foamy dark beige head. The aroma of coffee with chocolate, laurel liquorice, roasted malt and fruits. The taste is dry bitter, coffee, dark malts, with notes of chocolate and fruits. The aftertaste is long bitter.

Bottle. Deep dark brown pour with tan head. Roasty nose, nuts, oatmeal, mild chocolate and caramel malts on the nose. Even sweeter, with molasses notes on the tongue. Light, refreshing, silky palate. Lovely low alc stout. A fine beer.
