Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

A black colored beer, with a thick foamy dark beige head. The aroma of coffee with chocolate, laurel liquorice, roasted malt and fruits. The taste is dry bitter, coffee, dark malts, with notes of chocolate and fruits. The aftertaste is long bitter.

Pours a dark brown color, with tan head. I would imagine this being better on tap. However, this is the first Sam Smiths I have had in GA that hasn;t been skunked all to hell. Got it at Bankhead Beverage on the way back from Carrollton this weekend, with a mismarked pricetag. But onto the beer. Deep chocolate and oatmeal, grainy aroma. Lots of malt and hops mixed with a very sweet buttercream and oatmeal flavor. Yumm. Dry on the finish. But all in all definitely a fine oatmeal stout.

Bottle: Pours very dark brown with a tan lasting head. Very smooth taste and great mouth feel. Aroma: chocolate, coffee. Flavor: Roasted malts, toffee, oatmeal, some sweetness, finishes with just a hint of bitterness. This is my favorite Sweet Stout/Oatmeal Stout. I highly recommend this beer to anyone.

Very dark pour with mocha head and nice lacing. Nose of milk, chocolate and toasted oats. Flavor was chocolate, coffee, winter type spices and a metallic flavor that I didn’t mind at all...odd. Creamy body that made it seem richer than it was.

From the bottle.

Pours a deep black with a reasonably-sized light brown head.

Here is another beer that is almost too familiar to rate. The aroma? "Well, it smells like Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout!" (I guess that is some combination of molassas, chocolate, oak, and a hint of alcohol/wine, though I keep smelling Sam Smith’s and have a hard time thinking beyond that.)

The flavor is sweet, chocolately, before turning to a lovely and gentle lactic sourness followed by a subtle and smooth bitter roasted cocoa bean finish. The mouthfeel is superb, especially at 5%, creamy, substantial, delicous, luxuriously smooth and amply carbonated at the same time.

To me, this is the benchmark sweet stout. There may be others out there that are better, but this is the familiar and thoroughly excellent reference point to which I compare them.

HUGEly powerful and pungent stout. I love it. Salty and a bit oily, massively bitter, burnt and creamily grainy thanks to the oats which reappear in a looong finish. big and tarry and not for the faint hearted. when i’m 87 i’ll drink this stuff and talk in grunts.

If you like newcastle youll enjoy this beer even though this taste more darker. It has a bit of a tart taste because of the chocolate flavours and doesnt remind me of oatmeal at all, which i had been expecting it to be flavoured like. Great beer for a teaser or appetizer but not one you wanna stick with through out the night or finish it off with.

Bottle. Tan head. Dark color barely see through. Aroma is malty and roasty. Can smell black malts. Flavor is well balanced and smooth. Would like some more bitterness, but in general, this is the best ss beer that I have had. Simple, and tasty.
