Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

What a great, thick brew. Dark brown color with a light brown head, the aroma is rich with roasted chocolate malts, toasted oats, and some hoppy bitterness. Creamy in the mouth and belly, it tastes (in the former) of chocolate, oats, coffee, roasted malts, and somewhat subdued citric hops. Surprizingly clean finish. Great beer.

Time for a rerate. After looking at my top fifty there were a few brews that I thought might deserve/need a rerate and this is the first one. Near black color with a moderate, but lasting head of tan bubbles, lots of lace coat the glass. Dark fruit, prunes, lavender and mild pinot noir aroma. Silky and smooth in feel, perhaps a touch thin in the finish. Quite dry and with come dark berries and charcoal. A great brew, just not a top 50 anymore. 29 April 2002: (9,5,9,5,19 - 4.7)Just the silky feel you want from an oatmeal stout. Couple that with the floral/sherry aromas and dark/burnt fruit flavors its hard to resist.

Chocolat aroma. Very dark brown color, brown head, good lace. Intens flavor, sweet, chocolat, hint of cola, very drinkable, light roasted. Long lasting coffee liquor flavor finish.

Widely available and redily drinkable. Sweet stout flavors, goes down smooth like cream. Could use a dark bottle as it is occasionally strongly skunked, usually lightly skunked. The a aroma is very fruit and balanced with just the right notes for the style. Seems kinda dead overall but it's still a deliciuos beer.

Bottled at The Cardinal, Westminster. Surprisingly tasty for a mass produced, pasteurised beer. Very dark colour. Infused with creamy chocolate throughout. Also some ripe jammy fruit. Very smooth on the palate, but not too sweet. Nice enough but, for the life of me, I can’t see why it averages nearly 4. But Sam Smiths beers always seem to have been more highly regarded in the US than here.

Tap. Dark brown color with medium tan head. Complex aroma of sweet grain and hops with the same flavor with sweet finish. Good combo with strong cigar.

A good looking dark beer. Smells of sweet porridge (as expected). But..this beer is too sweet more my bitterness loving taste buds. Its a good example of an Oatmeal Stout - just aint my thing.

Black beer with off white head. Beautiful aroma of licorice and raisins. Extremely clean drinking with notes of biscuits and licorice again. Quality beer
