Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

A good looking dark beer. Smells of sweet porridge (as expected). But..this beer is too sweet more my bitterness loving taste buds. Its a good example of an Oatmeal Stout - just aint my thing.

Black with a small off-white head. Aroma of roast malt, grain, molasses and licorice. Rather sweet, almost sugary flavour with licorice notes.

Hall of Famer. Deep blackish/burgundy in color. Aromas of malt, chocolate, milky, creamy oatmeal, and toffee. Goes down smooth, with sweet, lactosy malt, followed up with the classic chocolate/caramel/coffee/cream of an oatmeal stout. Wonderful beer.

Deep black beer with a thick creamy moka head which stays on and on. Almost viscous in appearance. Wonderful nose of chocolate vanilla. Very creamy mouthfeel with roasted almost smoked malts, burnt chocolate, caramel. Very earthy. And did I say creamy....MMMMMMMM

Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (milk chocolate, caramel, roasted grain), with notes of vanilla, toffee, licorice, raisin, and charcoal. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy/velvety texture, soft carbonation. Complex malty aroma with many pleasant subtleties, rich mouthfeel, and a great flavor balance for the style. I think I’ve rated this a solid 4.0 every time I’ve ever had it. Though there is some room for improvement, this is clearly a benchmark.

Bottle. Creamy light brown fully lasting head. Nice chocolate aroma. Average finsh, very licorice-flavor. Oily palate. A very good oatmeal stout.

2001: Truly wonderful stout that is just bursting with sweet, winey, chocolatey flavors, a beautiful body and robust head. A nose that is just a bit too faint and a slightly too strong bitterness running through the palate keep this from joining Mackeson and Youngs in my pantheon, but for those who like their oats more robust and less sweet and smooth, this could be the one.

2003: Some classics don't ever fade, even after a couple of years of rating like crazy. Changing the points around a little; can't call it perfect in appearance with the tiny little head it has, but on the other hand I do feel the aroma to be stronger and more complex than before. The McNeills Oatmeal I had the other night is similar; I think I'm finding I like the more roasty bitter stouts more these days. Masterpiece.

i was pretty excited to taste this. pretty black, looked great coming out of the clear bottle. chocolate biscuit dough aroma with a floral edge. tasted of pain au chocolat, mint, malted milk, perhaps port. not a lot of bitterness there but it still doesn’t seem oversweet
