Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Aroma of wood and roasted grain. Near opaque brown/black with ruby hilites using halogen. Decent tan head with a bit of lacing. Full mouth feel, a hint of sweet, a lot of roasted grain. Very smooth toasty drink. Nice balance of hop and grain at the end, evidencing a burnt/bitter dryness.

Nice and dark with a strong smooth taste. Has aromas of malt and caramel. The taste is simple with chocolate and cherries. Has lots of body, but seems to lack complexity. Think it is a little overrated.

Toffee, chocolate, sweet and roasty malts and also a hint of smoke in the pleasant and enticing aroma. Opaque darkest brown with tan/brwon head that recedes slowly to generous and lasting cover.with some sudsy lacing. Burnt raisins and chocolate in the flavour with some more salty/smoky character. Unique and intersting. Texture is very smooth with medium body. Not as thick as many oatmeal stouts but rather very refreshing. Bottle (clear).

Nice dark brown with a creamy tan head, great lacing, medium to full-bodied. Malty aroma as expected with hints of raisins and vanilla. Sweet tasting without being syrupy, great balance. The mouthfeel was heavenly, creamy with a minimum bite. A statement to the craft of the brewer. If there is better Oatmeal Stout I have yet to find it, Highly recommended!

Sept, 2002: This is a pleasant if rather thin bodied stout. A pleasant easy to drink beer for old ladies. [2.8]
Jan, 2005: Unpleasant metallic whiff from the co2. When gas has burned off there are savlon notes, a touch of roasted malts and a hint of fruit. Savlon again in the flavour along with boiled veg. Boiled brown sugar sweetness merging with a stewed bitterness. Stewed and boiled notes throughout. The artificial carbonation gives a silky unnatural mouthfeel. But let the beer settle for a bit and the mouthfeel is more pleasantly neutral. When carbonated and cold the fruit makes itself felt, with chocolate notes in the finish. But mostly tastes of boiled sugar, socks and cabbage water with a stewed bitterness in the finish.[2.7]

Bottle. Brown head. Very dark red brown body, almost black. Mild roasted malt aroma. Tickling your tongue this flavor is rather molasses dominated.

Purchased 355ml bottle from Cellars Wine & Spirits in Shorewood, MN. Pours a clear dark brown brew with a thintan head that slowly dissipates to a fine film and ring. Aroma of toasted dark malt, some oatmeal, chocolate, a hint of berries and some toffee. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of toasted dark malt, some chocoalte, toffee, and a hint of coffee. Finish is semi-sweetitw h a mild toasted dark malt aftertaste.
