Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Poured a deep brown with a healthy tan head. Beer definitely needed to warm up for its true aroma to shine through.. dark chocolate, roasted malts, a little caramel. Taste followed the aroma, and was quite sweet. Balance was solid, and carbonation was just right for a smooth coating mouthfeel. There was a medium-dry hoppy finish with some toffee. I’d bet that they could greatly increase the character and complexity of this stuff if they were to whip up a batch that was unpasteurized and unfiltered...

A must have. Not as chewy and more drinkable that St. Ambroise, but they are both very good. Dark brown with sudsy head. Drink your oatmeal! Taste is strong in-you-face. Almost thought it was a higher alcohol content.

Bottle (550ml). A perennial favorite - I buy a dozen of the gift boxes (Oatmeal, Old Brewery Pale, Nutbrown, a pin glass) every winter, mostly for this one. It’s all been said before - nice friendly stout with fruit overtones, some chocolate. Colour somewhere between an impenetrable stout and a deep nutbrown. Starts drinkable, finished drinkable, I never tire of it. Can drink - and have drunk - three at a sitting without getting restless for something different.

Very dark brown almost black in color. Nice looking head. Aroma was not to powerful yet was quiet sweet with soft bitterness. Flavour is more pronounced but we cloud say that it is still gentle. Light roasted java coffee beans, some bitter walnuts. Nice composition yes, but I did expect a bit more heart in it. A bit to bland, unrefined to the excellence. This was my 700...Thans Doug for this interesting beer !

Black with ruby highlights and a fluffy beige head that dissipates a bit. Aroma smells like The Beer Store (malty)and a bit of roastiness. Flavour provides a mildly roasty background for some fruity raisin or plum daliances. Pleasantly silky mouthfeel.

Black color. Very thick full cascading “G” type head. Aroma is roasted malts and chocolates. A nice silky smooth. Medium bodied sweet stout. Mild malts and hops. A very flavorful beer. Nice chocolate and coffee flavor. Well balanced. Just wish it were in a brown bottle. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and a touch dry. What a sweet stout should be

This brew has a mild hoppy malt aroma. Invigorated pour with a light brown head of small to medium bubbles and a opaque dark brown body with a receding lacing on the side of the glass. It has a surprisingly smooth flavor with very subtle taste. Hard to place the flavor, but it went down very easily and was very much to my liking.

Bottle. Bitch black colour with a light creamy head. Aroma is moderated roasted, with some notes of coffee, dry fruit like raisin and plum. Flavour was sweet but well balanced with light bitterness. Medium bodied. Finish is slightly coffee bitter.
