Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

The Celebrated Oatmeal Stout is a deep, barely translucent, aubergine-colored ale topped with a huge, dry frothy head that looks the color of cinnamon sugar. The retention and lacing are tenacious. The aroma is of warm cookies, soft, sweet herbs and roasted malt. It’s very soft and even. A soft, heavy texture slides down the throat. Despite the rich, sweet flavor of this, the tounge is left a bit dry. The first flavor is sugar and caramel. Then comes an herbal element that is somewhere between fennel and tarragon; perhaps licorice. The lengthy and marked aftertaste is of chocolate malt. Yes, there is a reason this is an old favorite. They sure can make stouts in England.

I love this beer. It was very dark and had a nice thick, brown head with staying power. A very malty beer, and I could really taste, well, the oats. A thick drink with a strong, lingering finish.

While at a bar I requested a Guinness, but they didn’t have any. The bartender suggested Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout as an alternative, and thus I tasted my first oatmeal stout. This is a delicious, dark, silky, smooth, bready beer. Buy the 550ml bottle and sip it through the course of an evening.

This is my favorit stout to date of any style. Highly recomended. The oatmeal stands out and is distinguisable. Chocolate and carmell stand out. Awsome
