Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Everyone I know likes this beer. I liked it so much that I bought an Oatmeal Stout T-shirt! Typically Samuel Smith-ian character all-around (which is to say excellent!)

Great stout, I was well impressed. Just the right amount of bitterness, creamyness, and rasted coffee/chocolaty goodness yummmm....I want to drink a lot more of this stuff soon.

Very nice stout. Not too bitter, good and toasty. NOTE: If you are ever making beer bread, this is the beer to use.

2001: Truly wonderful stout that is just bursting with sweet, winey, chocolatey flavors, a beautiful body and robust head. A nose that is just a bit too faint and a slightly too strong bitterness running through the palate keep this from joining Mackeson and Youngs in my pantheon, but for those who like their oats more robust and less sweet and smooth, this could be the one.

2003: Some classics don't ever fade, even after a couple of years of rating like crazy. Changing the points around a little; can't call it perfect in appearance with the tiny little head it has, but on the other hand I do feel the aroma to be stronger and more complex than before. The McNeills Oatmeal I had the other night is similar; I think I'm finding I like the more roasty bitter stouts more these days. Masterpiece.
