Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

This is probably the best of Sammy Smith. Great drinkability with just the right amount of aftertaste. Small bubbles and good consistency in the mouth.

Very dark brown, thin light tan head; aroma like the finest Belgian chocolate mixed with Atholl Brose. I want to fall into the glass. Silky body, fruity notes of cherry, redcurrant add an interesting layer to the silky malts and chocolate overtones. Sweet, luscious finish. One of those beers that leaves you at a loss for words. The classic oatmeal stout - depth without compromising stylistic adherence.

One word - wow! I was actually able to get a fresh and unskunked four pack the other night - and it was a treat. Aroma - roasted and inviting; Appearance - poured in a imperial, nice off-white 1 in. head hugged tightly to the midnight liquid; Taste - creamy, chocolatey and sweet but a balanced dryness in the finish - absolutely wonderful; top 5 all time on my beer list - highly recommended to all. Overall Impression didn’t get as high because its so hard to find this unskunked. Cheers!

RE-RATE: Wow, I used to drink Guinness regularly! While my tastes have evolved since my original rating of this, I still carry a torch for this very good English beer. ORIGINIAL RATING: Very good, full flavored, with hints of coffee, wood, oatmeal. I'm a Guinness fan, but this makes Guinness look like something advertised on American football commercials. Try it and you won't be disappointed!

Im amazed every time I drink this beer. Pours jet black with a nice amount of tan head. Aroma is an interesting mix of sweetness and sour. Taste is equally complex. Starts with coffe taste, then becomes sweeter, almost carmely, and finishes with some dry bitterness. Palate is like liquid velvet on your tongue. This is one of the best all around beers in my opinion!

I like this beer more and more each time I pop one open. Perfect sweetness for a stout.

Bottled(550ml). -this is one of the best beers that i’ve tried in last six months, deep dark coloured, airy pale brown head, chocolate cake and sherry nose, fruity(cherry) and roasted flavor, roasted malty and roasted coffee aroma with nice strong dark chocolate notes, slight bitterness, nice moderate bitter-sweet finish

Black. Did I mention this beer was black? Taste that lasts forever. Sweet roasted malt with plenty of hops.
