Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

The best $3 I have ever spent on a pint of Oatmeal Stout! Pleasant aftertaste and smooth going down. I think we have a keeper here.

I love this stuff! In fact, this is the beer that got me interested in trying real beers in the first place. Smooth, creamy, roasty, sweetish, and VERY satisfying stout. Goes great with English pot-pies and meat-loaf. I’ve never seen it anywhere ’on tap’ but would really like to try it that way! I also like the Nut Brown they make a lot.

There is a reason this beer has more ratings than any other beer in the top 50. Quite simply a very consitent, high quality brew... the best Ive had as of late. If you’ve never had a Sam Smith before, Id suggest starting off with one of these.

Wow! This oatmeal stout blew me away. Very good color, with a very nice smell. The taste was excellant with its roasty chocolate hints. Great.

Poured out of bottle, bought at Sam's Wine & Spirits in Chicago, 12/10/02. Deep, dark dark brown beer with a slight, murky brown cream head. The head forms in what I can only describe as small glops along the surface and on the edges of the glass, and it quickly gives off a wonderful malty cocoa (almost nutty) aroma. A very nice flavor of cocoa and malt, this one is a very easy drink for a stout, but does not lose any of the richness of flavor to make it so. It's just very tasty and feels wonderful going down. The finish is perhaps a little too bitter (like with some dark chocolates), but that mostly just makes me want to take another gulp to get rid of it! I This is one of the better stouts I've had, and I'll surely try some more.

My favorite beer! Its bittersweet finish complements a hearty dinner. It is great both chilled and at room tempature.

Definitely one of the best beers in the world. The oatmeal finish is so creamy. A meal in itself.

One of the best beers I've been able to taste. It's too bad it's so hard to find.
