Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Oh man, oh man. This is in my top 3, and the other two are also Samuel Smith’s (Nut Brown Ale and Imperial Stout). I don’t know what these guys do that’s different from basically everybody else, but it seems to extend to most of their beers that I’ve tried. I don’t see heads like this on anything else. Not foamy, not Guinnessy. Rich. Textured. Mature. Classic. Lovely. You can actually taste the oatmeal in this and I love oatmeal. It’s got a silky smooth sweetness with just a little tang to offset it. I drank this for years before discovering their Imperial Stout. I was surprised and a little sad that I actuallly liked that better. But I alternate between them these days and love them both. Man, I want to pour this all over my face and down the back of my shirt. I bet it would be good for the skin. Go for the big bottle (or two), not those little weenie four-pack bottles.

Not much to say that hasn’t been said about this one. The temperature is important though - too cold and you will never get the true flavors of this beer.

This has been one of my favorite beers for a long, long time. Great looking, it’s dark brown with a strong off-white head. Subtle aromas of chocolate and oatmeal and sweet malt. Taste is consistent with the aroma, only more definite. Sweet aftertaste is pleasant, not overpowering. This beer has texture unlike anything else - very smooth, rich and creamy. A most agreeable drinking experience.

My absolute favorite stout beer. Good to have when you are really hungry. Has a nice flavor, especially when it has a slight chill.

From 550 ml bottle. You can tell from the opening of the cap that you’re about to enjoy a fantastic stout. The aroma is great, strong and thick, if you can consider thick to be an aroma. Deep brown to black color, great dark tan head. The myriad of flavors includes some mellow chocolate, some burnt wood notes, and roasted malt. The overall impression of the flavor ends up much fuller than the 5% ABV would lead you to expect, the bitter flavor is not too bitter to where you cannot taste any of the sweetness, which is by no means cloying. This is a great beer, and one of the best stouts out there, in my humble opinion.

Poured from a 1 Pt. 2.7 fl oz. bottle. Looks coffee brown, with a low frothy cream-colored head. The aroma has a strong coffee overtone with some malt and smokiness. Smoother tasting that expected, with just the right carbonation. There is a pleasant domimance of oatmeal towards the end, which really seems to lighten the whole taste. I really enjoyed this stout.

55cl. Aroma is rich with roasted chocolate malt--lightly sweet and deep with very mild hop aromas. Caramel head quickly swallowed by the beer. Pleasantly sweet with a balanced bittern finish. It’s a bit viscous and has a very even and pleasing mouth feel. I don’t want it to end.
