Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

The head on this was very large and tight.Lasted a while also.Aroma was a deep malt,.barley.Tasted rich, and filling ,like oatmeal.had a dark brown color, and hearty taste.Finished just right. This is a heavy duty beer.At first i thought it was too strong flavor for me,but by the time I finished it ,it tasted pretty good.Too bad I only bought one.Good thing there’s plenty more at Trader Joe’s!!.

Bottle - Pours thick deep dark brown with tan medium head. Aroma is roasted coffee and sweet chocolate. Medium silky smooth palate. Flavor is full of chocolate and roasted coffee with just a touch of hoppiness on the follow-through. Nice bittersweet chocolate in the aftertaste with a touch of alcohol warming. Overall, this is an excellent stout......one of the best I’ve had.

I love this brewery, and this is one of their most consistent and delicious beers. Mildly roasted, not too overpowering... pours an opaque black with brown hints around the edges. Aroma isn’t too strong (probably because it isn’t hugely roasted) but it has the aroma of the roasted malts, with a hint of chocolaty sweetness . The mouthfeel is thick enough to know you are drinking a stout, but not syrupy. Hoppy bitterness on the swallow, which is usually almost unnoticeable in a stout, but well balanced in this one. Beers like this are rare, and it’s no wonder this has consistently high ratings.

Don’t know any lactating mother’s who’d take the challenge for this one! Aroma of a campfire-aged, dark coffee and roasted malts Thick light brown foamy head whithering into quickly disspating lacings leaving a lingering smoky finish. Took a few tries with this one....bet I will come back for a "refresher" course!

Poured from 550ml bottle into large dimpled mug. Aroma - Dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, and coffee. Appearance - Opaque black with creamy two finger tan head. Head dissipates rather quickly leaving nice lacing that fully coats the glass. Flavor - Tastes pretty much like it smells. Some dark fruit that I didn’t pick up in the aroma. Bittersweet aftertaste; but that’s not a bad thing. Palate - Not slick like some oatmeal stouts. More of a dry stout with the edge taken off. Carbonation comes through just enough to make it a bit lively on the tongue. Overall - Another great Samuel Smith product. Traditional and delicious. Would love to try this from a nitro tap.

550 ml bottle. Aroma of roasted malt, sweet smelling, and undeniably English. Pours almost black; reddish tones come out when held up to the light. Thick head, long retaining, decent lacing. Tastes of roasted coffee, sweet malt. This beer has remained in my top 10 for at least ten years, and for good reason. I know of no other stout that tastes quite like this. One of the greatest beers in the world right here.
