Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Bottle - Pours thick deep dark brown with tan medium head. Aroma is roasted coffee and sweet chocolate. Medium silky smooth palate. Flavor is full of chocolate and roasted coffee with just a touch of hoppiness on the follow-through. Nice bittersweet chocolate in the aftertaste with a touch of alcohol warming. Overall, this is an excellent stout......one of the best I’ve had.

Beer pours a thick, brown, and foamy head with an aroma of rich chocolate and molasses. It must be a perfect blackbody because of how dark it is (Physics Humor). The palate is somewhat dry yet delightful. The flavor is bursting with chocolate, coffee, oats, molasses, and other rich malts. The beer goes down extremely smooth. After injesting the beer a smooth coffee malt is left in the mouth just long enough to say holy shit that was good and long enough to open another. One of the best beers I have had. Upsetting that it only comes in a four pack!

This is definately one of my favorite beers. It has a great flavor that can be enjoyed at any type of event. I love the thickness and the fact that the taste does not smack you in the face. It is the beer I choose when I want something I know I will enjoy.

Best stout ever. Pours black with a huge light brown creamy head with excellent lacing. Aroma was of molasses, dark chocolate and mild coffee, like kona. Light hopping of flowers, and something that gives a hint of leather. Palate was bitter sweet and not at all offensive very drinkable. Creamy texture that reminded me of milk. Great for a session or just to have on hand for a special treat now and then. Loved it.

Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout 550ml bottle Recent bottling (SG13B1), celebrated 04/07 Medium pour in an English pint Poured black with opaque mahogany highlights with a large rocky somewhat lasting head. Smelt of strong molasses, roasted malt, and light dark chocolate, stone. Taste was upfront strong bittersweet dark chocolate followed by a strong bitter roasted malt, almost burnt and moderate sweet dark chocolate on a long finish. Palate was medium bodied, creamy, softly carbonated and moderately astringent. Overall, a great straightforward rewarding oatmeal stout that tastes great. Taste was upfront

I loved this beer. I had it at a bar (North Gate Tavern in Baton Rouge), so forgive me if I can’t be very specific about it. The girl who shared it with me said it reminded her of Werther’s Originals candy. I can’t disagree. Sweet, but not too sweet. Bitter but not too bitter. Looked dark from inside the bottle. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I will try it again.
