Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Pours very dark brown with a long-lasting, creamy tan head. Very smooth, full flavor with plenty of sweet malts. Slightly bitter aftertaste with hints of chocolate. A great stout, I wish I could get this by the case!

Beautiful color and creamy head. Roasted coffee and fig(?) hints in the nose. Very rich texture to the tongue and a very nice blend of chocolate, malt, maple hints. A terrific oatmeal stout.

550ml bottle. Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout. This is the one that started it all for me. My dad would purchase a few of these every now and then to share, and as a result, I began to develop a liking of dark beers as a teenager. It pours opaque brown/black with a marvelous tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malts with hints of caramel, chocolate and fruits. The flavor is outstanding. Initially it’s sweet roasted malts, later followed by the taste of dark fruit, chocolate, coffee and hint of dry hop bitterness. Full of flavor that does not overwhelm. Extremely smooth and creamy and incredibly easy to drink. While this is not the absolute best beer that I’ve had, it is simply a classic and one of finest examples of the style. Thanks Dad.

I have recently been on a stout kick, and this one has made me decide to continue it. Definitely one of the smoothest, most pleasant beers I’ve ever tasted. It’s a full, well-rounded stout with a creamy dark chocolate character. Pours nice and dark with a tan head, and the finish is excellent. Awesome beer!

Almost black in color with a foamy head. Very smooth and full-flavored. Enjoyed this immensely. I started brewing my own beer about 9 months ago, and my next venture will be an oatmeal stout (and an IPA) because of this beer.

An excellent combination of stout and oatmeal. The aroma is delecious with the smell of oatmeal and cinnamon. Pour is nice with a thick head. Flavor is tremendous with the taste of roasted oats and cinnamon. A great brew.

Excellent stout. Smells a little than it tastes. Ends dry requiring you to take another drink. Very addictive. Tastes strongly of molasses.
