Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

This is a very enjoyable stout. It is a nice dark beer (I didn’t even realize it was a clear bottle until I poured the beer). Nice malty, oaty, and chocolatey flavor. There really isn’t anything bad to say about it.

Black. Average size creamy off-white head with excellent lacing. Aroma is lightly hoppy with roasted grains. Initial flavour is lightly bitter with a sweet finish. Although the flavour is sweet, it is balanced: tastes like lightly bitter chocolate. Full bodied with a creamy texture. A very good stout. It’s too bad the LCBO doesn’t stock this regularly.

WOW. This beer really rocks. As with any stout, it presents a challenge at first, but the sweetness and surprisingly lean character give this beer an unmatched drinkability. Excellent even in the summer.

Bottle. Very dark, with wonderful creamy head. Smooth taste and good feel. This is what a stout should be. Really outstanding.

THOUGHTS: At first I couldn’t figure out what all the great ratings fo this beer were about but I must have chilled it a little too much because when it warmed a little, all of these great aromas and flavors came out. Plus I’m still amazed at getting great imported beer from a clear bottle. TECHNICAL: Poured a dark brown to black. Aroma was light caramel, chocolate and coffee along with some toffee and maybe some licorice and cola. The flavor is the same as the aroma. The initial vlavore was moderately swee and lightly bitter, while the finish flavor was heavy sweetness and moderate bitterness with an average duration. The body was medium to full and oily with fizzy carbonation.

Nice aroma of spice and brownish head. Flavors include caramel and brown sugar. Very sweet and syruppy. Absolutely one of my favorites of all time.

Bottle poured in pint glass. Opaque chocolate brown with 4 finger, lasting tan head that forms a nice crusty lacing. Aroma is at first cookie or biscuit-like, then molasses with slight chocolate and hops. Taste is incredibly smooth, enticingly sweet malt balanced well with hops, a trace of smoke flavor, and dark fruit. Quite a complex taste. Palate is medium and velvet, beer is not so heavy and filling as some stouts, definitely could have three or four of these. Hard to believe this beer has been pasteurized as in the description? I can’t recall sampling a better stout.
