Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Re rate: Ordered at a pizza restaurant because they had it listed as 'Sam Adams' Oatmeal (not heard of that) - oh well - still the same - Smooth, choclatey after taste, nice thick creamy head. Definitely one of the better stouts I have tasted - especially one so easily obtainable. Noticed the sweet aroma as well. Same score.

Mmmmmmm. Thick pour and creamy head. Oatmeal fills up your nose and mouth with a hint of residual suagrs. If anything bad can be said about this one it may be that it carries a mild cloying quality with it that some other inferior Oatmeal stouts don't have.

Damn fine beer!! This has the full flavors that make beer worth drinking. It has better a cleaner creamy finish that comes unexpectedly after that full bodied flavor as well. You can taste a hint of coffee among the complex roasts, but nothing overpowers ... just tastes great.

Definately one of the best stouts out there. So black that you can’t see the other side of the glass/mug. Very rich, dark flavor, a touch dry, and fairly roasted. Sweet finish, and not overbearing with bitterness. Just smooth, full taste all the down.

Black. I thought it was a brown bottle before I poured. Tan head that disappears soon but leaves a nice lace on the glass. Coffee and bitter chocolate very noticeable in the aroma, and also a little tobacco. Flavor of the same coffee and chocolate with a little cream. Faint malt and hops tastes as it warmed. Mildly bitter finish. excellent beer.

wonderful dark colored beer with a thick slowly dissipating head. Bitter & sweet taste with mild aftertaste. My first & not last oatmeal stout

Sweet aroma, beautiful black color. It does have a small coffee flavor, but not so much that it really tastes like coffee at all, which would make it bad. A tantalizing flavor that leaves you wanting more. This uncomplete finish is it’s only drawback.
