Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Coffee with brown sugar aroma, a hint of chocolate. Incredibly dark, almost purple, with a huge cappuccino head. The head looks like pancake batter, with assorted sized bubbles bursting on top, some lace. Great coffee flavour, strong roasted bitterness. Has a rich full silky texture, and a fabulous liquorice aftertaste. A Wonderful Sweet Stout!

I never understood the concept of ’silky’ in a beer until I tried this one. The body is jet black, and is topped by a minimal mocha head. Rich coffee and wine(!) aroma. The flavor is a combination of mocha, malt, butter, mild chocolate, wine, and sweetness. The bitterness comes to the fore as you swallow. A delicious concoction -- this beer is one of the reasons Samuel Smith has such a great reputation.

Quite possibly my favorite beer ever. Beautiful dark appearnce that brought a a tear to my eye, nice rich aroma. There description of a ’silky texture’ is right on. It does as an earlier rater alluded to, lose its head too fast, but thats the only real flaw I can find in this beer.

Sweet aroma, beautiful black color. It does have a small coffee flavor, but not so much that it really tastes like coffee at all, which would make it bad. A tantalizing flavor that leaves you wanting more. This uncomplete finish is it’s only drawback.

Very dark brown nearing black body with a huge creamy tan head. Aroma is chocolatey and roasted nuts. Flavour is silky smooth malts and roasted cocoa with a slight fruity note. Finish is sweet and chewy. A beauty!

This brew has a mild hoppy malt aroma. Invigorated pour with a light brown head of small to medium bubbles and a opaque dark brown body with a receding lacing on the side of the glass. It has a surprisingly smooth flavor with very subtle taste. Hard to place the flavor, but it went down very easily and was very much to my liking.

Note: Very fresh bottles. Black color with a small light tan head. Aroma is malty and oaty. This beer is silky smooth. Tastes of oatmeal, chocolate, and malt blend perfectly. Sweet smooth finish. I love this beer.

Black, opaque color. I thought the bottle was brown (it's clear). Roasty coffee-chocolate flavors, sweet but subtle and nothing overpowering here. Exceptionally smooth and creamy. One of my favorites.
