Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Oatmeal aroma. Bittersweet taste -- slight hint of chocolate. Persistent, tan foam. Dark brown to black. Slight aftertaste. Tasty.

This stout is dark - about the same color as chocolate chips - you can not see through it when you hold it up to the light - beautiful. The head is tan, thick and lasts for a while - I've got the foam 'stashe going on. The aroma has hints of mocha or coffee. I can't taste the oatmeal, but it tastes great and goes down smooth! This is a fabulous stout, and I imagine it would taste awesome on nitro.

Last of my Sam Smith sample pack with cool pint glass. Poured a nearly opaque black with a thick creamy brown head. Aromas of coffee, malt, toffee. The flavour was excellent, well balanced and drinkable, toffee, malts, sweet, coffee, mild hop bite and an almost sour tang in the finish. Sampled while watching Shaun of the Dead. Good zombie beer.

Black in colour, tan head. Roasted, dark chocolate malt nose. Flavour is cherries and dark chocolate (German chocolate cake?). Smooth as a baby's behind.

Pours a black color with a small beige head. Aroma is malty and coffeeish with hints of hops, oatmeal, barley and brown sugar. Taste is slightly sweet, yet bitter with hints of roasted coffee, brown sugar, hops and oatmeal. Excellent.

The body is all but opaque, with a brown head. Aroma is chocolate, grainy and sweet. The palate has a velvety smooth texture. This is a great sweet stout.

Wow, what a great beer! The samuel smith brewery is one of the best in the world. This oatmeal stout transcends the traditional human senses and touches eternity. Perhaps that is a bit too lofty, but that was my experience while drinking it. Experienced a kind of euphoria that seldom occurs when imbibing beer, quite pleasant. Dark body, thick thick thick. Taste is complex and darker than anything I have tasted as of yet. I do like this one quite a bit.

Just looking at this in a glass makes you start drooling. Chocolaty and creamy, and complex. Great beer.
