Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Smells of chocolate and spices with hints of coffee. Pours nice dark brown with a nice light brown head. Tastes similar, I mainly get chocolate and oatmeal flavors. It is very sweet but does have a nice bitter finish. The finish was a little dry for me and the flavor wasn’t as overwhelming as I expected, but this is one good brew.

Pours (as I would have guessed) black. Aromas of blueberries and chocolate. Taste is creamy and smokey with a hint of barbeque sauce.

Great beer. I wonder why they chose clear bottles as well, it seems that can’t help them any. Toasty oat flavor, surprise surprise, along with thick chocolatey flavors and coffee overtones. Pretty malty, as one would expect. Brilliant. I expect a lot from Samuel Smiths, but this one totally blew me away.

This is my all time favourite oatmeal stout. It has a beautiful pour and a wonderful , true to form oaty, chocolaty and toasty flaour. I haved loved this beer since the first time I had it on dead tour.

This is one of my favorite beers. very complex flavor with an apparent roasty and oatmeal flavor at first and sweet after taste. Definitely Sam Smith’s best. I’m going to be drinking this one often.

Pours dark, but not black. Aroma is nicely malty and chocolaty. Taste is absolutely delicious. Chocolate and oat taste come through. Very pleasant mouthfeel. Nice mild hop finish.

Great! Pours brown-black with a small tan head. Roasted nose, with maybe a hint too much alcohol. A nice sour start leads into a choco-coffee middle and nice warming port finish. Maybe a little more like an imperial than an oatmeal - but still great! Also this is my 100th!!!!!! Not a bad one for 100.

Black-brown, tall tan head. Chocolatey and charred toast aromas. Big roasted malt flavours, coffee, chocolate, black cherry hints. Rich and creamy mouthfeel, rounded balanced palate. A fantastic stout from a brewer that has yet to disappoint.
