A completely satisfying meal in itself I picture it shouting at the craft beer aristocracy that are the overly strong imperial stouts. Making a fine case in the matter of subtlety and rich sophistication that it proudly imparts. Creamy, appropriately sweet and delicious, it politely asks all the craft brewers out there, flooding the Ratebeer top 50 with more and more imperial stouts to divert their attention towards sweeter pastures. seansvoice (1), Sugar Land, Texas, USA does not count | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jun 1, 2007 Poured from "Victorian Pint" 550 ml bottle into English pub pint glass.
Beer is absolutely opaque -- just black, with a nice medium-tan head that retains nicely.
Flavor is sweeter than Wee Heavy, but with a smidge more hops. Bitter chocolate and espresso notes abound, with a bit of milkiness, and flavor is consistent throughout the warm-down. Not as "chewy" as Wee Heavy, but not as heavily carbonated as Samuel Smith’s Taddy Porter. All in all, mouthfeel, flavor and drinkability are spot-on.
This may well be Samuel Smith’s best, and would make an excellent "cordial" for the beer drinkers. I don’t believe I would want to drink Oatmeal Stout in a session, but it certainly qualifies as a great beer to start or end the session. tadois (9), Quito, Ecuador does not count | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Feb 18, 2007 If I am only going to get one more beer before I put beer away for life, this is the beer I am going to have. Each sip reminds me why I have a spare tire. Sam Smiths Oatmeel Stout is a must have for any beer lover. I only rate this beer less than a 20 because I have hope that some day something better will come along. Carlus12 (361), London, Greater London, England

Taste is smooth leaving a hoppy / fruity finish. Definitely drinkable and cannot wait for another. patty26 (95), New York, New York, USA

The aroma is of semi-sweet chocolate. It is extremely malty. The taste is sweet like candy but not overwhelming. I am really surprised by how much I liked this beer. Perfect balance of maltiness and hops and ends with a somewhat clean finish but at the same time a trace of roasted malt that makes you crave more. My favorite oatmeal stout! Initial taste contained strong coffee and fruity notes, mellowing into dark chocolate and roasted malts in the middle, with an ever present alcohol and carbonation depth to it throughout. A definitive dessert beer.
