Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

I had this beer out of a bottle and I was very much impressed. It poured well and had virtually no head. It has a dark brown color typical of a stout. The flavor is strong, and has almost a sweet aftertaste. Great aroma and palate. Sweet enough to appease the senses but enough body to be manly. Excellent beer.

This is one of the tastiest beers I’ve ever had. Poured from the bottle, it’s deep brown color juxtaposes it’s warm taste.

Bottle. Dark brown color, almost black. Burnt aroma with hints of oatmeal. Oatmeal dominates the flavor, slightly astringent, with the roasted barley balancing it nicely. Somewhat winey. Very tasty.

Very dark brown with creamy tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Prominant brown sugar taste with hints of oats and smoke. An excellent stout. I will be purchasing more.

Smooth, dark and very nice for a first at 9:30 in the morning as football games get started. Whifs of oatmeal, chocolate and a hint of roast coffee.

Bottle. Pitch black, opaque, 2-inch creamy beige head. Aroma of cinnamon and molasses. Caramel, coffee, port wine, chocolate, all with just the right touch of bitter-sweetness. Mouthfeel soft, port wine-like. Extremely satisfying with little noticeable alcohol effect.

Bottle at Harlow’s in Peterborough. Pours black as night. Oatmeal tan head rises magnificently and gracefully exits by halfway through the glass. Notes of oatmeal, cream, chocolate, some malt, in the aroma. Mouthfeel is top notch. Silky smooth, rich, surprisingly drinkable for such a full beer. Flavor is yeasty, chocolate, oatmeal, cream, vanilla, and a bit of hearty smoked meat. Finishes very smooth, with the mildest of hop bitterness. Really a superb beer, certainly my favorite stout, and the best Sam Smith.

Dark black, minimal carbonation. Strong, off white head that sustains. Thick lacing. Coffee, caramel, roasted nose. Effortless first taste - incredibly smooth, full-bodied of course, and a sweet aftertaste. Rich and creamy, very fulfilling.
