Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Bottle. Aroma a nice robust malt. Pours dark with a nice tan head. Taste is a smooth malt, with a bit of rich oatmeal taste. A touch of hops comes through at the end, but no real aftertaste. Very nice.

A very dark oil pour with a tan head. Caramel, cream, oats, earthy, toasted malt, a hint of nuts and molasses. Oaty, cereal and malt taste with hints of cream, chocolate and molasses. Has a creamy smooth mouthfeel. A nice full body beer with lots of flavor and a very smoth slightly acidic finish from the hops. I have been waiting a while to try this beer, now I know what the hype was about. All around a very good beer. Must stock up!

Yes! Less ABV than expected, and so very smooth to boot. Finish is the bitterness of good quality chocolate. 550ml bottle a perfect size.

One of my favorite stouts. Strong, filling, full bodied, and chocolate flavor that leaves the drinker satisfied.

12oz. Oh man is this tasty. Pours black with a tan head. Nose was closed at first, turned to roasted malts, chocolates, coffee as the beer warmed. Some raisin in the body, along with a return of the roasted malt, sour malt, chocolate, coffee. Just the right amount of carbonation makes this smooth and creamy in the mouth. Extra points for being so widely distributed but still so tasty.

One of my favorites. Pours black. Smells of oats and chocolate. Tastes of coffee, oats, malt. It’s sweet but balanced. Love it.

What a stout! Pours black with a nice foamy, tan head. Faint coffee-like aroma. Underneath the toasted malt, coffee flavor one expects from a stout is a slight fruity flavor, like blueberries or rasberries. Just a great complex flavor that isn’t overwhelming. Goes down very smooth.
