Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Sammy Smith’s oatmeal stout has been a classic among my friends for years. It’s one of the best tasting stouts that can be found just about anywhere. Of the many things that make this beer great, even people who are afraid to drink any beer darker than a glass of water will find this beer tasty. This is the kind of beer that makes people realize that there is a whole world of beer out there to be discovered. And after they discover it, they’ll keep coming back to Sammy Smith and his oatmeal stout.

Aroma is a sweet caramel scent with light taste tones. Color is solid black with mellow carbonation and a nice tight tan head. Taste is smooth and roasted. Starting with a full body that goes down very easy with a creamy feel. Finish come in with sweet caramel and roasted flavors then it turns dry with a mild bitterness in the after taste. This is one of the most well balanced stouts I have ever had.

Had it last night in a restaurant in NJ with a great variety of brews. Thought it to be an excellent brew, easy drinking. Dark, with chocolate/coffee hints of flavor. Recommend it to all who have not tried it.

This is one of my favorite beers. Sweet taste with hints of caramel, molasses and butter. Extremely good beer with a nice dinner.

Bottle - pours a cola-like black color with a thin tan head. Nose of chocolate, roasted malt, amd coffee. Could sit and smell this beer all day - reminds me of a freshly ground bag of coffee.. just smells so good. Taste of roasted malt, oats, and chocolate coffee. Body is thin with the perfect amount of carbonation for the ideal mouthfeel for this stout. This is without a doubt one of my favorite oatmeal stouts - which is a style that ranks very highly in my house.

Love this beer. Wish it were easier to obtain in good condition as I have found it in dusty bottles more often than not.

Bottle, Rehills, Newcastle. A perfect bottled ale. Beautifully red-tinged black appearance, with a caramel coloured head. The sweet, malty taste is perfectly accompanied by a juicy fruity flavour and a roast, slightly smoky aroma. Plenty of body, but neither heavy, nor cloying. I wish they did this in cask, but when the bottle is this good, there can’t be too many complaints. A beer I regularly come back to.....

Had about 10 beer drinkers do a taste test of about 15-20 dark beers from all over the world. This one came out on top by a landslide. Great beer!!!
