Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Black with a thick, creamy head. Wonderful roasted malt aroma. Smooth, full mouthfeel. Sweet malt flavor with hints of chocolate. Finishes with a lingering sweetness. Simply a terrific sweet stout.

2+ inch head with black thick body. Not bad taste, though a little strong... Nice thick creamy tan head. Probably not something I’d get again (especially for FOUR DOLLARS per a 550 ml bottle!!!) But worthwhile to try.ORIGINAL RATING: 2+ inch head with black thick body. Not bad taste, though a little strong... Nice thick creamy tan head. RE-RATE (10-14-06): Black, almost completely opaque body with just a slight ruby-red highlight, and a couple of fingers of tan head. Smells malty and chocolatey. Roasted coffee/chocolate and caramel dominate the flavor. A couple of slightly off flavors in the background, but roasted chocolate dominates them. Fairly sweet. Fairly full-bodied. Better than I remember. I am extremely impressed!

Smooth and refreshing brew. Beautiful dark color with tastes of roasted maltiness, brown sugar, coffee, and a hint of (you guessed it) oatmeal. Wonderfully balanced throughout, finshes like a sweet stout should.

550 ml bottle pours chocolate black with a big tan mousse head and long finger lacing as it fades down. The aroma is the standard for quality stout as these guys set the bar, doughy, chocolate, a little roastedness and vanilla. Sweet oatmeal is the first flavor that hits my tongue followed by chocolate and roastednesss as the creamy mouthfeel laces down the inside of my mouth as it did before down my glass. The carbonation tinges on the tip of my tongue leaving the flavors of bakers chocolate and a lasting sweet bitterness.

Appearance: very dark. Big head, beige color, compact and persistent. Aroma: toasty malty, stewed oat, candy, sweet chocolate and grain coffee. Touches liquory and winy. Notes of black olives, roasted sugar, cherries and figs. Mainly sweet. Flavor: Sweet, roasted cereals, candy, handcrafted bitter chocolate and coffee. Fruitness of figs, plums and cherries. Presence of clove, moka and smoked. Liquory. Finish with low-medium dryness, but persistent. Complex and balanced flavor. Palate: medium to full body. Creamy and silky texture. Low carbonation. I love this beer, is very exquisite, great stout.

A wonderful stout. Has a deep color with a rich thick head. Nice lacing. A sweet smooth flavor of cocoa and oatmeal with aftertastes of coffee and banana. A great overall brew.

Dark brown with satisfying head on it. aroma of oats and malt, and the taste explodes with roasted malts, nuts and oats shining through. Finish is nice and the body sits well on the tongue.
