Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Black body, huge light brown head, stays long, leaves beautiful laces; Quite big nose, deep and complex: loads of oatmeal, but also a sugary sweetness, figs and fresh fruit like apple and pear; Balanced body, perfectly smoth, with perfect amount of carbonation, all elements in play; quite long finish (I expected a bit more fill) complex with loads of character, bitter, fresh with a little sweetness, some malt and again fruit, pear and cherry. Great and very, very well made beer.

A better stout than the dry stout that Samuel Smith’s makes, it is an excellent beer for when you’re in a stout mood. One of the best stouts I’ve ever tasted. the flavor of Oatmeal/Malt is noticible though it isn’t strongly overpowering. It is very bitter like a good stout, but not as bitter as an IPA. Definately worth a try.

18 oz bottle. Pours very very dark brown, almost black, with a light brown head. Aroma is slightly hoppy but dominated by malt and coffee flavors. The flavor is amazingly complex. The oatmeal adds some sweetness that balances this perfectly delicious stout. Best stout I’ve tasted.

12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Pours black with lasting big tan head. Aroma of chocolate milk, cookie dough, fresh turned earth. Fresh fruity raisiny flavor with strong choclate notes and clean fruity, tangy finish. Medium body and low carbonation make for great mouthfeel. In a word: delicious.

This stuff pours out like motor oil! It is super thick and almost completely opaque with a dark brown head. It has a very strong roasted taste with hints of chocolate and caramel that lingers long after the first sip. This is one tasty stout!

Pours nearly black and has a nice brown head that is rather large at first. Nice strong roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate aroma. Flavour starts with roasted malt and chocolate with a little coffee and smoothly turns to a mostly coffee with some chocolate finish. On the sweet side, but not overly so. Carbonation is just right and the body is on the full side, but it feels very smooth. I’m extremely pleased with this brew and with every sip I notice something new about it. The fact that it is smooth and easy to drink are nice bonuses. It’s been only very recently that I’ve been interested in stouts, and I’m glad it led me to try this very good brew.

wow. This beer is like a nice dessert after dinner. I challenge any beer to be better than this, and hold every beer I drink to this standard if it wants to rank any higher. The body is a nice thick dark body, with a mocha colored head. the aroma is a roasty oat smell. Surprising this has a bit of a sweet flavor, and the oats are definitely present, chocolate, and roasty nut overtone are in the finish. It goes down very smooth, with just a kick of bitterness at the very end. Everything is perfectly blended. This just may be a perfect beer.

Poured a dark brown with a beautiful light brown head. Nose of bitter chocolate and coffee notes. Tasted roasted oats, coffee and cocao. Slightly bitter. Tasted like a mocha coffee. The best part about this beer is the mouthfeel. It is amazingly creamy and makes the beer go down incredibly smooth. This is one of my favorite beers. Highly recommended.
