Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Mmmmm! Black body with a creamy brown head that actually grew throughout the experience. Creamy mouthfeel with chocolately sweet finish. I was happy to shell out $7.99 for this 20.3 oz bottle of bliss.

May 16, 2007; 12 oz. (?) bottle sampled at The Copper Turret, Morrisville NY. Unable to take contemporaneous notes, but this is a wonderful sweet stout -- aromatic, smooth and satisfying. Highly recommended.

Re-rate on Feb. 18. 2008. A scrumptious stout -- oats & brown sugar in the nose. Subtle bitterness on the back end provides enjoyment between sips. Full-bodied & "dessert-like", but not overbearing. A wonderful brew.

From 550ml bottle. Tasted at 53 degrees. Black with a frothy tan head, nice lacing. Huge nose. Really huge. The smell is bitter-chocolate covered cofee beans, with vanilla, wood?, malt. The taste is sour/sweet, maybe smokey. There seems to be some hops trying to break out from the malt, they give it a flowery/fruity taste. This is a very complex beer with several things going on at once. I just tasted the Bells Kalamazoo Stout before this and I can say they are two very different beers. They are both classified as "sweet stouts" but this easily fits that category while the Bells didn’t. The commercial description is dead on with the finish, I would say that it is "bittersweet." I gotta tell you, these last two beers have really opened my mind as to what a good stout can taste like. I am so used to having American Tap Guiness and these beers are so much more. The mouth feel is not as nice as the Bell’s but it is pretty good. This is a good beer that I will be buying in the future.

Without a doubt. This is one of the finest beers in the world. Coffee, slight chocolate, and just enough bitterness to scare off the sissies.

The measuring stick for Oatmeal stouts. A very drinkable and sweet beer. Perfect finish that leaves you craving another.

Dark with a tan head; great looking beer. Flavor is rich, nutty, and chocolaty with a wonderful sort of milkshake-like mouthfeel. This beer is tremendously satisfying and could easily substitute for solid food in a diet consisting only of beer.

Dark brown with a beige head. An intriguing aroma of chocolate and some fruit I can’t name. Possibly redcurrant. The taste has liquorice, alcohol, coffee, black treacle sweetness. Combined with only slight bitterness this makes a stout that it would be hard for anyone not to enjoy.

From a 550ml bottle. Appears black in the glass save light brown around the edges. Not much head, brown and it does leave lace as the beer recedes. Smell is hard to place bitter and acidic. Could this be the oatmeal? Light sweet nutty smell as well. Taste is creamy and smooth juxtaposed bitter flavors. Brew is malty with a burnt-nut taste. Doesn’t bite like alot of stouts. This brew is smooth but still complex. I would call it medium bodied despite the bold appearance. Very drinkable. One of the better stouts I have tasted. Wish there was more than one other oatmeal stout in Maine to compare it with.
