Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Wow. Any other explanation of this beer's absolute perfectness would be futile. Wow.

The aroma is wonderful, though not as pronounced as I expected: toasty, malty, nutty. The pour was a thing of beauty, while the flavor was probably the best I’ve encountered: chocolatey but not sweet, oat-y nuttiness without the flavor of breakfast, and an aftertaste of chocolate espresso. Simply outstanding.

absofrigginglutely delicious! nutty, oaty, choclatey, with a brilliant jolt of espresso. Cherries abound with silky smooth cream and roasted choclated. It has to be the best sweet stout I have ever had (so far). Bravo to the S.S.!

Surprisingly, the clear bottle has no negative effect on the flavor. If it does, I’m amazed, as it seems impossible a beer could be better. Tastes a lot like Young’s chocolate stout when gulped, but even better when drank slowly. The beautiful thing about this is I can drink it as slowly as a higher alcohol beer, due to the immense flavor, and drink more because the alcohol level is so low. Guinness tastes like heinie by comparison.

Has body that is rich but not too thick or heavy. Good hoppy flavor with just a little sweetness and a pleasant stouty aftertaste. This is one of my favorites.

Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout is a luscious and complex beer. It’s almost black and with a tan, dense creamy head. After the initial bitter flavor, the complex flavors sweep over the tongue, slightly sweet, chocolatey, oaty and more. I agree that this stout should not be drunk cold, nor room temperature, but somewhere in between.

One of my all-time favs. i agree with what some people are saying with lacking complexity, but that is one of the reasons i love this beer. i can drink them continuously! pours like delicious chocolate, strong, malty aroma, starts out silky smooth and finishes the same way, chocolate and slightly sweet molasses flavors a rich malt. great with italian food.

This is by far my favourite beer. It doesn’t have a very strong aroma, but the taste makes up for it. The taste is dark, nutty and reminiscent of roasted vegetables, but it’s not overly bitter either. It’s also very thick, but smooth and not syrupy. Overall, you can’t get a better stout than this.
