Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Jet black pour with 1-inch thick tan head. Aroma is assertive like rubbing alcohol, roasted barley, oats. Smooth texture with a medium body. Begins with malt sweetness - molasses, caramel and chocolate, chewy toffee - and continues into a balancing hop spice bitterness, though subtle. Finishes on a cadence of dry and bittersweet coffee flavor. Malted barley combined with oatmeal and more roasted barley add a nice nuance to this beer which separates it from the average stout. Slick palate and a somewhat abrupt finish.

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with a huge brown head that slowly diminished. A richly intense aroma of chocolate, oats, coffee, tar and smoke. Creamy mouthfeel with a smooth bitterness that lingers well past the finish. A delightful stout if all aspects.

Pour is dark with a tan two fingered head. Medium body, oily and lasting. Nose is sweet oatmeal, bitter chocolate, and malt (hoppy). Taste is similar with a lasting oatmeal flavor. Great, cheap brew.

Poured black with a thick 2 finger, lasting head that produced excellent lacing. Aroma was malty oatmeal with a few roasty notes. Taste was roughly matching. A nice medium bodied, creamy stout for a cold thanksgiving weekend.
