Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Bottle. Pours black with a thick, creamy pale tan head with stunning lacing. Nose is big roast malt, chocolate, and a certain creamy character that must be attributed to the oats. In the mouth this beer feels amazing, silken, roasty, a bit nutty, not the most complex stout, but an immensely enjoyable one.

One of my "first" favorite beers. Pours like a brown stout in color and is on the sweeter side like a sweet stout. There is a nice roast on the finish which is semi dry and slightly lactic. I haven’t had one in a while, but it is as nice as I remember.

Bottled. This was I think the first good beer I ever bought after finding Ratebeer and deciding I was going to start rating. It was also the last beer I drank before I began rating. And it has been 5 years and 2600 ratings before I have revisited it.

I remember thinking it was incredibly sweet at the time, and the flavor was very different to me. I see that sweetness now, but it is way more mellow than I perceived, with most of the character being chiefly lactic. There is a little bit of roast and grain in there, with a slightly carbonic, oaty note. I’m not sure how crazy I was about this at the time, and I know I’m not crazy about it now, although to me it is still one of the only truly sweet "sweet stouts" I’ve yet drank. Very few oatmeal stouts dare approach this level of sweetness that is not just a byproduct of underattenuation.

A terrific beer and a particularly interesting stout. I enjoyed the texture and flavours better when it was colder - as when it’s warming down the toasted notes and the coffee become a tad overwhelming.

A smooth, sweet stout and one of the better beers from Sam Smiths. Too sweet to be sessionable, IMO, but a bottle makes a nice dessert. A good-looking beer: coal-black with a lavish cappuccino head showing lace and length. Restrained aroma of cocoa powder, quince paste, raisins and tokay, spoiled in part by that a pasteurised boiled-lolly taint. Medium-bodied and creamy. Minimal bitterness and "roastiness". Chocolate pudding, blackcurrant jam and oodles of sugars. Nice balance for a sweet stout. Dry finish. (500ml bottle from Leura Cellars)

550 ml bottle from Keller’s IGA. Pours an opaque near-black with a half-inch tan head and some nice visible carbonation right after the pour. Aroma of roasted barley malts, chocolate, yeast, and hops- light aroma overall. Flavor of sweet roasted malts, chocolate, oats, yeast, molasses, and dust. Medium bodied, with carbonation that provides a bite. Not as smooth or creamy as advertised. Very dry. Not a bad beer, but overrated.

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with a huge brown head that slowly diminished. A richly intense aroma of chocolate, oats, coffee, tar and smoke. Creamy mouthfeel with a smooth bitterness that lingers well past the finish. A delightful stout if all aspects.
