Captures the soul of beer. It has a maltiness that reminds you that beer is a product of the soil. Balance of malt and hops.

Nothing pale about it. Deep, clear, raspberryish red pour with thinning off-white suds. Wafts of booze and musty grapefruit hoppiness. Big, bludgeoning hop bitterness with a twist of aniseed-like spice. But little else. A nibble of smoky caramel maltiness? By Sam’s high standards, disappointing.

550 ml brown bottle. With its creamy light tan head and golden brown color, this beer is a pleasure to look at. Aroma is certainly malty with a faint hint of hops. Medium body with lingering malt taste. A typical Samuel Smith session beer (a good thing).

Bottle. Golden amber with a nice creamish white mostly diminishing head. Aroma of caramel, malt and hops. Soft flavour, bitter hops and caramel, toasty malt. Soft bitter finish with some caramel.

Bottle at Birdies, Odense: Clear copper with a little white head. Caramel, malts - easy sweet, & hops. Ok body - though its close to watery. Fine bitter finish.

Pours clear copper/red with a medium head that collapses. Caramel aroma. Big caramel flavor but lacks the body to support it. Finishes a bit watery with a dirty flavor. Bitterness subsides immediately.

Bottle. Dark copper color. Sweet, malty aroma, with similar flavor. Was not as impressed by this beer as I have been of other beers from this brewery. Decent drinking with a meal.

I don’t recall ever having a bottle of this that wasn’t oxidized and or light struck, must re rate some day. Page 404 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide and only 263 of his 500 Classic Brews to go.
